FUTURE SERVICE DESIGN AWARD 2016

1. Theme for application

“Creating a vision of the convenience store of the near future”

We are inviting ideas about new services and convenience store designs which will be made possible in the year 2020 by the introduction of robot technology, to create a new vision of convenience stores in the near future.

For example,
・A store where products are automatically displayed and disposed of
・A store providing services for non-Japanese, elderly or disabled customers
・A store that always remains in a clean state, etc.

There are no limits to the form that a robot can take. You can treat the whole store space as a robot, for example, display shelving robots. We expect free thinking, but we will also focus on feasibility.

General comment

In the Future Convenience Store Contest, with the theme of “Creating a vision of the convenience store of the near future”, we invited ideas about new services and convenience store designs which will be made possible in the year 2020 by the introduction of robot technology. This was different from a general contest in that, rather than simply collecting ideas, we wanted to find talented people with excellent ideas, to get them to participate in the robot contests to be held each year, and realize their ideas together in 2020. We did not receive as many entries as expected, which may have been due to the pressure because the theme was set as robot technology that can be realized in 2020, and because a total of 30 robot researchers representing Japan formed the committee for the technical category. However, from the 27 entries, we were able to identify 10 groups of talented people, which was a great outcome.

In this contest, we were looking for a future vision of an actual store: Seven Eleven. The Seven Eleven Prize was awarded to the “unmanned mobile sales convenience store robot CAPxSELL” (Kai Kikui), selected by Seven Eleven Japan Ltd. as meeting the needs of actual work and feasibility. This proposal was for an unmanned capsule-type robot that moves by itself and sells products, the same as the first prize winner “CARGO STORE BOT” (Hiroyuki Tsukamoto and Ken Matsuzawa). These designs reflect the need for mobile supermarkets and mobile convenience stores in depopulated areas. The feasibility of this idea has increased based on the spread of electric vehicles and automatic driving technology.

The designs selected for the second prize were the “Hyper Convenience Store” (Tomoyuki Kaminouchi) which utilizes automatic display and automatic driving technology to change convenience stores distributed in large numbers around urban areas to an omni-channel model; the “24h Apartment” (Yusuke Arisawa) which combines the functions of rental housing and a convenience store using a robot clerk; and the “Convenience store showing recommendations with video and sound” (Satoshi Sakai, Mizuki Nakajima and Yuhito Sugano) which reads consumers’ needs from facial expressions and tags, and directly provides necessary information.

The designs selected as prize winners were the “Train-type convenience store Tetote selling local specialty products” (Tomoyuki Sano, Natsumi Ogasawara, Haruna Wada and Daiki Akiyama) proposing a convenience store formed from three cars including a dining car; the “Convenience Store in 2020” (Jou Ichinari) proposing a future convenience store life with virtual robot clerks and display shelf type robots; the “Machibako” (Yoshifumi Sasamoto) proposing a convenience store like a cross between a vending machine and a kiosk, utilizing spaces between buildings and vacant lots; the “Near future convenience store system IDAP” (Yuriko Yanagiya and Yuka Kawakami) which extends the functions of a warehouse, automating loading, unpacking and shelving, to deliver products directly from the back yard; and the “A convenience store like a park for the little things of everyday life – talking, walking, playing and reading” (Yuki Matsubara) proposing a park where men and women of all ages can gather.

The 10 winners will be involved in the Technology Challenge as design advisers. The Technology Challenge 2017 will be held from December 19-21, 2017 at Sendai International Center. After that it will be held in Tokyo in mid-October 2018. The date and venue for 2019 is yet to be decided. A demonstration of “the convenience store of the near future” will be presented in Aichi in early October 2020.
